Klang.io have announced the launch of a new AI-powered software tool that’s capable of detecting multiple instruments in an audio file and transcribing their parts to sheet music, tablature or MIDI data. Said to be a world first, Transcription Studio can run as a DAW plug-in or standalone application, and promises to make it easier than ever for professional and hobbyist musicians alike to document and communicate even the most complex of musical ideas.
Transcription Studio includes three operation modes that have been designed to allow it to adapt to any style or musical goal. First up is Universal Mode, an all-purpose mode that’s been designed to cover a wide range of common instrumentation such as voice, piano and guitar, and is said to be ideal for learning, songwriting and audio production. Classic Mode has then been fine-tuned to detect orchestral instrumentation such as strings and wind instruments, making it a valuable tool for more advanced compositions and ensemble arrangement. For those working with bands, there’s Rock Mode, which Klang.io say is capable of accurately identifying and transcribing complex, electric guitar-heavy arrangements. All three modes can be customised using a Transcription Wizard feature, which offers control over the likes of quantisation settings or hand separation for piano pieces.
With the appropriate mode selected, users can begin the transcription process have the option by either uploading audio files, inserting YouTube, Instagram or TikTok links, or capturing a live input source. Transcription Studio’s AI models will then detect the separate instruments, analyse the chords, melody and rhythm of the piece, and transcribe them! Additional editing can be carried out using an integrated Notation Editor, which includes tools for transposing, correction or piano hand-splitting. The results can then be in range of formats, including to PDF and Music XML sheet music, guitar tablature for GuitarPro and/or MIDI parts for use in a DAW. The entire task is carried out via cloud processing, and is completed in under 30 seconds.
“Transcription is an essential skill in music that, until recently, has only been accessible to those with traditional musical training. Klang.io’s mission from the beginning has been to create AI-powered tools that can unlock this process for everyone, and provide a streamlined access point for music makers or performers of any educational background or genre to use it to learn, communicate and collaborate more effectively. We leverage AI technology in service of human creativity, rather than replacing it, to make the process more efficient and allow people to focus on doing the fun, creative work that has always been at the heart of music-making.” - Sebastian Murgul, Founder & CEO, Klang.io
