Sound Magic launch Supreme Drums Orange

Combines sampling & physical modelling

Sound Magic Supreme Drums Orange virtual drum instrument sample library physical modelling

Sound Magic have announced the launch of a comprehensive virtual drum instrument that’s been designed to cater to everything from music production to film scoring and game audio.

Supreme Drums Orange is powered by Sound Magic’s all-new Supreme Drums Epic V2, a hybrid drum-modelling engine that supports up to 65,536 velocity layers via MIDI 2.0 and is capable of rendering an unlimited number of round-robin variations. It also employs Freeform Layer V2, a proprietary technology that the company say goes beyond traditional velocity-layered sampling and fully exploits the high-resolution velocity data offered by MIDI 2.0. It’s said to significantly improve realism even with MIDI 1.0 devices — even when using the older protocol, the software’s snare drum still provides 127 velocity layers. The product has also been fully optimised for use with electronic drum kits.

Sampling & Modelling

The original sample set used to create the instrument contained 87GB of audio, and Sound Magic say that they have ‘distilled’ that down to a 680MB factory library without compromising on sound quality or detail. a set of 13 complete drum kits are provided, along with over 33 individual drums and cymbals. The modelling engine is said to be capable of faithfully reproducing the character, depth and nuances of the original recordings, with the abundance of velocity layers allowing the software to deliver a dramatic improvement to kit elements that are particularly sensitive to velocity variations.

Because Supreme Drums Orange utilises a mixture of sampling and physical modelling, it’s able to offer far more control over the sound of its kits than would be possible with a typical sample-based offering. a new Physics section has been added to the GUI, allowing users to change the material of drum heads and shells, adjust the size and tuning of drums and control properties such as head tension and resonance.

Effects & Mic Signals

An updated Fusion Effect System then offers a selection of built-in EQ, compression and transient shaping; a set of simple controls ensure the product is welcoming to beginners, while still providing more in-depth control for advanced users. As the original recordings were captured from multiple mic positions, Supreme Drums Orange is kitted out with an array of mixing and spatial placement options, and supports formats from stereo up to 11.1 surround.

Compatibility

Supreme Drums Orange is supported on PCs running Windows XP or later, and Macs running macOS 10.6 and above. According to the company’s website, the Mac version will release at a later date. VST2, VST3 and AU plug-ins are available.

Pricing & Availability

Supreme Drums Orange is available now, and is currently (20 March 2026) being offered at an introductory price of $69, reduced from its full cost of $129.
