Wes Audio’s ever-expanding Next Generation series takes a best-of-both-worlds approach to gear design, combining the sound and feel of high-quality analogue outboard with the convenience of plug-ins. The range already includes an 1176-inspired offering in the form of the ng76, and the latest arrival to the range introduces a stereo unit based on the 1178.
The new ng78 houses two channels of FET-based circuitry that can be used as independent, dual mono processors, or linked together as a stereo compressor. It promises to deliver the familiar character of the 1178, but benefits from some handy extras that make it a little more versatile than the unit that inspired it. Extended attack times of up to 20ms allow for more control over how the unit responds to transients, and a new 2:1 ratio option offers a more subtle compression character — the much-loved ‘all buttons in’ mode is available, too.
Other enhancements include a Mix knob that allows for instant parallel compression, a choice of high-pass or high-shelf side-chain filter options, variable amounts of THD (Total Harmonic Distortion), and Modern and Vintage modes that have been designed to capture the sound of the sought-after F and G revisions of the original 1176.
As with all of the Next Generation line-up, the ng78’s analogue circuitry is controlled digitally, allowing the device to be controlled from a DAW plug-in. As well as offering precise control over the unit’s operation, it also opens up the possibility of automating parameters from within a DAW, and of course, saving settings and having them instantly recalled as a session loads.
