Q. What gadget can switch a mic between my looper pedal and the PA?

Radial HotShot DM1 dynamic mic selector.Radial HotShot DM1 dynamic mic selector.I have a Roland RC‑30 looper pedal, but I want to be able to use a single microphone, set up so that I can use a foot pedal to switch the mic from the PA to the looper to lay down a vocal loop, and then switch the mic back to the PA. Most people I've seen use two separate mics — one for the PA, and another for the looper. Can you suggest a suitable switcher? The nearest I've got to solving this is a Boss AB‑2, which would work except that the sockets are unbalanced quarter‑inch jacks — I want to use microphone XLR cables.

SOS Technical Editor Hugh Robjohns replies: There are a few options on the market at the moment. For example, the Radial HotShot dynamic mic selector would do the job, as would the Palmer DMS. But these will only work with unpowered dynamic mics.

There are several A/B switchers suitable for unpowered dynamic mics, but the Whirlwind Selector XL also allows you to change the destination of a phantom-powered microphone. There are several A/B switchers suitable for unpowered dynamic mics, but the Whirlwind Selector XL also allows you to change the destination of a phantom-powered microphone. If you want to use a phantom-powered microphone, then you could consider the Whirlwind SelectorXL.
