AES goes north

New group opens in Leeds

A new group of the Audio Engineering Society (AES) has just opened in the north of England. Based at the University of Leeds, it is one of only three AES groups in the UK (the others being based in Cambridge and London). Kerry-Anne Kubisa (pictured), Studio & Recording Technician at Leeds University, and founder of the new venture, has said: “Over the years I have seen the audio industry in the north grow from strength to strength and with this, there has been the need for a presence; a forum to unite the Industry and represent the people here.”

AES North hold meetings on the third Tuesday of every month, and they’ve already got some interesting events lined up. On April 19th, recording engineer and monitor designer Roger Quested will be hosting a seminar entitled Understand Monitoring For Surround Mixing, in which he’ll be demonstrating monitor and subwoofer placement, proper use of the LFE channel, and common mistakes made when using surround sound. That takes places at 6.30pm, at the University of Leeds.Kerry-Anne Kubisa, founder of the new AES north of England group.

Simon Humphrey is a seasoned recording engineer (he has recorded artists such as Abba, Bill Haley and the Clash) currently working at the Chairworks residential studio, and he’ll be hosting an event the following month, on May 17th — again, at 6.30pm at Leeds Uni. There, he’ll be discussing the ins and outs of running a commercial studio, mixing workflow when using outboard in a DAW-based setup, and the finer points of analogue audio equipment in general.

AES North’s third event, to be held on June 21st, is being held at Chairworks Studios and will be hosted by Walter Samuel, whose engineering career over the last four decades has seen him work with Tina Turner, Heaven 17, Blancmange and more. A three-part event, the first section is titled ‘Life Behind The Glass: A Recording Engineer’s Journey’, and in it Walter will discuss the changing role of the engineer over the years, while sharing some of his experiences in the industry. In Part 2, he will demonstrate various recording and miking techniques using a range of DPA mics. Finally, attendees will be given a guided tour of Chairworks facilities. The June meeting will commence at 6.30pm.
