Don't Lose The Music Week: 4th - 10th September 2006

First ever Don't Lose The Music Week
Next week (4th - 10th September) is 'Don't Lose The Music' week, a campaign headed by The Royal National Institute for Deaf and Hard of Hearing People (RNID), to raise awareness of the dangers of excessive exposure to loud music amongst musicians, DJs and gig-goers.

Don't Lose The Music has been running for three years, but this is the first week-long event in the campaign's history.

The RNID are encouraging DJs, nightclub promoters and quizmasters to get involved by holding their own fundraising events, and T-shirts and badges (costing £10 and £2 respectively) are available from the Don't Lose The Music web site.

Various celebrities are involved, many of whom have experienced hearing difficulties. Danny McNamara from Embrace suffers from tinnitus — a constant ringing in the ears caused by over-exposure to loud music — and strongly advises others to take care of their hearing before it's too late. Other include trance guru Moby, who wears earplugs to gigs to protect his most important asset, and legendary producer Sir George Martin , who is another who swears by hearing protection: "If you really have to listen to very loud sounds, please use earplugs or ear defenders."

For more information, or if you wish to do some fundraising yourself, email the Don't Lose The Music team on dontlosethemusic@rnid.org.uk.
