Eternal Research launch Demon Box Kickstarter campaign

Generates sound from electromagnetic waves

Eternal Research Demon Box electromagnetic interference electronic musical instrument

Eternal Research have launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the production of Demon Box, an innovative new electronic musical instrument that detects electromagnetic waves and turns them into musical notes. The campaign will be running until 3 October 2024, with the company hoping to ship the first units in Summer 2025. It’s already proved to be a big hit, having reached its funding goal in just 10 minutes!

The Instrument

Eternal Research Demon Box electromagnetic interference electronic musical instrumentDemon Box generates musical notes from electromagnetic interference, and comes loaded with a healthy selection of audio, MIDI and CV connectivity. The triangular-shaped Demon Box can be played with anything that emits electromagnetic interference: mobile phones, neon signs, speakers and audio equipment, power tools, neon signs, electric guitars, microwaves, fluorescent lights, electric tooth brushes… the list goes on! A collection of 33 inductors form a triangular field that detect electromagnetic interference, isolating it from ambient noise to create new and interesting sounds.

A wealth of connectivity options mean that the instrument can be used alongside a wide range of other kit, and Demon Box is also equipped with a range of onboard adjustment and processing capabilities. Three mono audio outputs on quarter-inch TS sockets are joined by a stereo headphone output, and each of the three channels include panning, phasing and effects layering, as well as benefitting from independent, dedicated aux inputs that allow users to mix between external signals and the internal inductors on a per-channel basis.

You also get a trio of CV outputs that make it possible to combine the instrument with modular synth rigs, as well as a MIDI output on a five-pin DIN connector, and a USB-C port that can function as an audio output or for charging the device. All of the Demon Box’s I/O can be used simultaneously.

Hear It In Action

The video below gives a quick demonstration of what Demon Box is capable of.

“The Demon Box is an open palette, and I didn’t want my design decisions to limit people’s view. I wanted to keep the complexity and noise in plain view, so that they can experience these phenomena and realise that the noise can be a good thing. The chaos is the music, or the seed of all new music.” – Alexandra Fierra, Founder, Eternal Research
