Captures a vintage Dulcitone

Frozen Plain Dulcitone sample library virtual instrument

Promising to help composers and producers relive the magic of the 19th century, the latest addition to Frozen Plain’s product range captures the sound of an authentic vintage dulcitone. Simply named Dulcitone, the new arrival runs in the company’s free Floe software, and is said to offer an impressively realistic sound that will help to add a unique texture to users’ compositions.

The instrument sampled for the library is a five-octave Model F from Vintage Keys Studio, and is owned by Steve Christie, an experienced session keyboardist and audio engineer who helped to carry out the sampling of the instrument. It was close-miked using Oktava MK012s fitted with omnidirectional capsules, while room-mic duties were fulfilled by AKG 414s, resulting in a sound that the company say is both detailed and immersive.

Key features

  • Up to five round-robin samples per note — a natural, non-mechanical playing feel.
  • Soft and loud velocity layers — maximum expressiveness and dynamic range.
  • Meticulous stereo recording — a fully immersive playing experience.

The instrument includes a total of 26 sound sources, and features 18 presets crafted by Frozen Plain’s Sam Windell. Along with authentic-sounding, customisable patches that capture the true sound of the original instrument, Dulcitone also ventures into less traditional territory, offering a selection of processed sounds that range from deep, rich basses to “shimmering, unpredictable sonic colours”.

Compatibility

Dulcitone runs in Frozen Plain’s free, open-source Floe software, which is supported on PCs running Windows 10 or later, and Macs running macOS 11 and above. VST3, AU and CLAP plug-in versions are available.
