Tokyo Dawn Labs’ Ohlhorst Digital range is a series of mastering-focused plug-ins developed by Jan Ohlhorst, and it’s just gained a new frequency-selective stereo-imaging tool that’s been designed to improve mono compatibility.
Ancora is described as a stereo-image correction processor, and its behaviour is governed by three main parameters: Depth, which determines how strongly the correction process is applied, and narrows the image of excessively wide mix elements; Timing, which sets how quickly the processor responds to changes in the input signal; and Target, which sets the frequency threshold at which processing begins — content that falls below the threshold will maintain its original stereo field.
The plug-in includes two operation modes: L/R and M-S. As its name suggests, the former carries out its work in standard left/right stereo, and redistributes panning energy between channels using minimum phase filtering; the latter operates in Mid-Side and uses linear phase filtering. There’s also a variable RePhase control that the company say is capable of compensating for the phase artefacts and energy loss introduced by stereo-width processing, allowing users to maintain a source’s natural punch and presence.
Compatibility
Ancora is supported on PCs running Windows 7 or above, and Macs running macOS 10.13 and higher. VST2, VST3, AU and AAX plug-in versions are available.
