OBSO: debut instrument from Circle Cynths

“The instrument born from obsolete tech”

Circle Cynths OBSO software synthesizer

OBSO is the first release from Circle Cynths, the synth division of established sample and loop library developer Circle Drums. Described as “the instrument born from obsolete tech”, the debut offering has been created using a versatile collection of VCRs, cassette decks and other consumer products from the '80s and '90s.

The instrument is housed in a simple and intuitive GUI that the company say has been designed to deliver a good sound no matter where the controls are set. Despite having only five parameters, OBSO promises to deliver a huge range of sounds that range from “nostalgic synths, creamy pads and lush basses” to “shimmering bells, burnished brass and scintillating strings”.

Aimed at everything from film and game scoring to providing the basis for modern pop productions, the instrument comes loaded with a collection of 120 presets that will be able to find their way into just about any production. Take a look at the walkthrough video below to hear it in action.

Compatibility

OBSO runs in Native Instruments’ Kontakt Player or Kontakt, and requires versions 7.10.5 or higher.

Pricing & Availability

OBSO is available now, and is currently (1 September 2025) being offered at an introductory price of $69.69, reduced from its full cost of $100.
