GForce Software’s latest official Oberheim recreation captures the sound of the TVS Pro, a duophonic synthesizer that was favoured by artists such as Martin Gore, Adrian Utley, The Prodigy, Peter Baumann and Nils Frahm.
Originally launched in 1975, the Oberheim TVS (Two Voice Synthesizer) combined a pair of the company’s SEMs (Synthesizer Expander Modules) and added a keyboard, enabling true duophonic performance for the first time. It was later redesigned as the TVS Pro, which introduced some sequencing and modulation features. Now, GForce have worked alongside Oberhim to bring the TVS Pro’s spirit to life as a virtual instrument. The release promises to capture the sonic character of the original, and comes packed with over 635 patches, including over 220 new sounds and more than 400 converted SEM patches.
Oberheim TVS Pro features two fully modelled SEM voices, each with dual VCOs, multi-mode filters, envelopes and modulation functions. GForce say that their development team meticulously captured the subtle analogue quirks and rich tone of the original hardware, resulting in a genuinely expressive software instrument that blends retro character with digital precision. They also took the opportunity to introduce a third VCO — which doubles up as an LFO — along with velocity and aftertouch support, and a powerful dual 16-step sequencer. Some built-in effects are present, too, with the instrument boasting a stereo delay, reverb and a phaser.
