The Novation Bass Station by GForce reimagines the iconic synth, designed to model its raw, punchy analogue character while adding a wealth of modern features. The original Bass Station (reviewed way back in SOS July 1994!) was a revolutionary response to the digital dominance of the early '90s. GForce’s recreation aims to deliver the same sonic power whilst expanding its capabilities for modern producers.
Users can select mono mode as in the original or take advantage of a new 16-voice polyphonic mode.Staying faithful to the original oscillators and 12/24dB filters, the Bass Station software synthesizer introduces new features, including polyphony with up to 16 voices, unison modes and vastly expanded modulation options through the X-Modifier system. X-LFO and X-ADSR modulation paths open new sound design possibilities, allowing for dynamic control of nearly every parameter without manual mapping. The built-in sequencer now supports features like macro automation, individual step velocity, probability and advanced randomisation, while the arpeggiator offers scales, chords and swing adjustments.
The new version also boasts a high-pass filter and effects section, adding distortion, chorus, delay and reverb. Pan Spread widens the stereo field, while two programmable macros streamline real-time performance tweaks. The Bass Station’s updated patch browser provides access to over 300 presets from acclaimed sound designers, which can be found using the new tagging, sorting and search tools.
