Kerwax is an all-analogue recording studio located in Brittany, France, that also manufactures a small range of high-end audio gear. Their latest offering, the Melodium P22T, is a hand-built valve microphone preamp contained within a portable enclosure.
The unit employs a pair of 12AX7 valves along with a 12AU7, and utilises transformer-based input and output stages. Input impedance is switchable between 50 and 200 Ω, and with a healthy 80dB of gain available the device is well suited to a wide range of microphones — including those with lower output levels, such as passive ribbons (including the company's own Melodium 42Bn!) . A regulated power supply is housed within a separate enclosure, and is capable of delivering power to either one or two units to allow for mono or stereo operation.
