Modbap Modular CLRS Eurorack filter saturation lofi tape disortion module

Modbap Modular have announced that the new stereo effects Eurorack module they revealed at Superbooth 24 is now available for purchase. CLRS (pronounced colours) reimagines the company’s HUE module, combining DJ-style high- and low-pass filters with some versatile saturation and stereo width tools and a built-in ducking compressor.

Both of the filters are controlled from a single knob at the top of the module — turning clockwise from the centre engages the high-pass and turning anti-clockwise engages the low-pass — while a collection of six dials within the same section provide the saturation and width effects. Drive covers everything from subtle saturation to all-out distortion, while Mag aims to recreate the subtle warmth and saturation associated with magnetic tape, and is joined by an Artifacts control that introduces hiss and tape-warp effects. Lofi then reduces the module’s sample rate, emulating the characteristics of lower-quality recordings, and sits opposite a Bit Depth control that offers a range of bit-crushing effects. Finally, Width provides some control over the stereo width of the module’s output.

A one-knob compressor section follows, and features three selectable ratio options along with a ducking input that makes it possible to control the amount of dynamics processing being applied with the likes of LFO and envelope modules. A patch section occupies the bottom of the panel, providing the module’s stereo I/O and offering CV inputs for the Filter, Drive, Mag and Lofi controls.

“Both CLRS and HUE are really about adding colour to sound. My vision with CLRS was to take what HUE does best — enhancing and transforming the tone and texture of any source audio — and demonstrate how much utility can fit into such a compact unit. Adding stereo functionality takes it to the next level. This new module has more sweet spots, more surprises. When I think about distortion, for example, it’s not about noise — I’m usually going for something that creates a pleasant, nostalgic sound reminiscent of something recorded to tape. It’s about adding harmonics, enhancing harmonics. I love the subtleties of tape and recording with vintage audio gear. Although it can get gnarly, CLRS is about those subtleties and nuances.” - Corry Banks, founder of Modbap Modular
