MIDI orchestration tool gains powerful new features

Nextmidi Divisimate 2 MIDI orchestration divisi chord split plug-in application

Virtual orchestration experts Nextmidi have announced the second major version of their flagship product, Divisimate 2. Now available as a plug-in as well as a standalone application, the software retains its core functionality of splitting chords from a MIDI controller and dividing them between multiple virtual instruments, but has gained a number of new features that greatly expand its capabilities.

We put the original version to the test in SOS August 2020, so you can take a look at our full review to find out more about its key features.

What’s New?

A headline feature of the latest version is the inclusion of a built-in arpeggiator that offers Basic and Expert modes. The former offers all of the functions you’d expect from an arpeggiator, while the latter allows users to build their own custom phrases, textures and melodies, as well as allowing for note overlaps and delay compensation to ensure that legato transitions in orchestral libraries remain in time.

The company have also developed a new Transformer section that is capable of applying real-time operations to incoming notes and controller data. The feature makes it possible to block key ranges, trigger notes only from a user-defined velocity, scale CC message ranges and much more.

The amount of individual instruments that can be triggered has been greatly expanded, too: while the original application made it possible to create up to 32 parts at once, Divisimate 2 introduces a Multitimbral Ports feature that allows it to address up to 512 instruments. It’s also possible to combine multiple orchestration presets into dynamic patches and switch between them based on input conditions such as top note, velocity or CC values.

Other improvements and additions include a new Performance Settings window that provides control over global keyswitch, humanisation and preset transition settings, along with a preset import function, global scale and tempo settings and more.

“We wanted to really open up what kinds of orchestrations you can create with Divisimate. We’re still discovering new things that can be done with the added features, so we’re excited to see what the Divisimate community comes up with in the next weeks and months.” - Steffen Brinkmann, Co-Founder, Nextmidi
