Drum Workshop, or DW, are well known for their range of high-quality drum kits, but they recently made a leap into the digital world with a new virtual drum software package (DW Soundworks) and a range of innovative hybrid acoustic/electric kits (DWe). They’ve just announced the launch of Metal Legacy, a free expansion for the former designed for those in search of hard-hitting metal, rock and punk drum sounds.
The expansion pack includes samples taken from a huge collection of kits — over 130 instruments in total — all of which promise to deliver the heavy, aggressive tone required for modern rock and metal tracks. There are 24 presets included, 12 of which feature dry samples, with the other 12 processed using DW Soundworks’ selection of onboard EQ and compression. As you’d expect, many of the samples capture a range of DW’s own kits and instruments, but the collection also includes some darker-sounding offerings from Slingerland, as well as a range of other kits from Japanese, German and American manufacturers.
Compatibility
Metal Legacy runs in DW Soundworks, which is supported on PCs running Windows 10 or 11, and Macs running macOS 11 and above. VST2, VST3, AU and AAX plug-in versions are available, along with a standalone application. The software can be downloaded and authorised via Roland Cloud, which requires a free Roland Backstage account.
