Polarity Modular from Soniccouture

Created in collaboration with Ian Boddy

Soniccouture Polarity Modular software granular synthesizer

The latest instrument to be created using Soniccouture’s Polarity engine has been designed in collaboration with UK-based synthesist Ian Boddy, and has been built around 250 custom waveforms created with his extensive collection of modular gear.

Polarity Modular brings together a collection of samples captured from the likes of a Roland System 100M, Serge Modular, Buchla Sound Easel and many more, and promises to combine the ‘feel’ of analogue gear with the extensive sound-shaping capabilities of granular synthesis. Its main view keeps things simple with a set of four macro controls and a pair of waveform displays that host a patch’s two core samples (referred to as a and B Elements). In addition to the collection of onboard sounds, the instrument allows users to drag and drop their own samples into the waveform views.

A Grain Edit page then offers a dedicated set of parameters for each of Polarity Modular’s two granular engines, while a Synth Edit page provides access to the likes of amp, filter and LFO controls; once again, a dedicated set of parameters are available for both the a and B Elements. An FX page follows, and comes equipped a pair of separate insert chains and an IR reverb with dual sends. Insert effects include NI’s Replika and Phasis effects (among others), while the reverb houses a set of custom impulses created with Ian Boddy’s modular rig.

Compatibility

Polarity Modular runs in Native Instruments’ Kontakt Player version 7.10 or later, which is supported on PCs running Windows 10 and above, and Macs running macOS 11 and higher. VST3, AU and AAX plug-in versions are available, along with a standalone application.
