Dynamics processing experts enter the 500-series race
UK hardware manufacturers Safe Sound Audio, who have gained noteriety with their P1 and Dynamics Toolbox audio processors (reviewed in SOS October 2003 and SOS October 2008 respectively), have launched a module for the API 500-series format. The P501 is a multi-purpose "tracking toolbox" that has a microphone preamp with an astonishing 72dB gain range and a 60kHz bandwidth. Line-level signals and instruments can also be connected to the device, via a jack socket on the front panel of the module.
The unit is equipped with Safe Sound’s ‘peakride’ compressor circuitry, which “uses multiple side-chains in tandem allowing for very musical dynamic control of source material”. The result of this is a very transparent sound that “evens out levels in a very musical way without robbing the sound of life”. The P501 also has a limiter that is versatile enough to be used as a peak protector for tracking, and also a brick-wall effect for drums and the like.
It is available now from Safe Sound in the UK for £517 including VAT, but the company are currently running a competition where you could win a P501 and an API Lunchbox system. Visit www.safesoundaudio.co.uk/competition.html to enter!
