Radical vocal sounds for experimental composers and producers

Spitfire Audio have announced the launch of Xtended Vox, a new sample library developed in a collaboration with New York-based experimental musician, composer, and performer, Lea Bertucci. Aimed at experimental producers, composers, and beatmakers, the library presents a collection of radical vocal samples which have been processed to create a range of bass drones, sound effects, rhythmic clicks, glissandi, and haunting choir sounds.

Lea’s own vocals have been captured and are presented alongside recordings of acclaimed vocalists Audrey Chen, Cansu Tanrikulu & Phil Minton. A collection of presets are available for each performer, adding up to a total of 49. Spitfire say that the most radical and eccentric of vocal techniques are on offer, from visceral throat singing to alien nasal sounds, along with whispers, whistles, and shrieks. The resulting samples have been processed with a range of digital and analogue effects, with users able to blend between a selection of layers with differing effects using the plug-in’s Dynamics fader.

The Expression control simply provides a volume for the selected preset, whilst Dynamics blends between either dynamic or processed layers depending on the preset.

A built-in reverb is provided, and offers seven bespoke reverb models, whilst a Start Point parameter serves to trigger samples at a random point, allowing users to cut into longer samples or add variation when programming repeated notes. Further shaping capability is then provided by Attack, Decay, Sustain, and Release controls.

“With this library, we set out to push the human voice to new extremes, and what we’ve ended up creating is a completely wild and unique toolkit that allows the user to rethink vocalisation in terms of texture and timbre.” - Lea Bertucci

The NKS protocol is also supported, allowing for advanced integration with Native Instruments’ range of hardware controllers.
