Spitfire Audio's latest creation is an affordable software instrument that combines samples and synthesis, and was developed in collaboration with Warp Records electronica duo Darkstar.
As its name suggests, Haunted House majors on unsettling sounds, textures and atmospheres, its 44 presets providing everything from sub-bass patches to eerie pads, processed drums and mangled vocals. In Darkstar's own words, it evokes the “spectral echoes of rave culture and industrial white noise”, and in addition to being designed for the moodier end of dance music, would also be very much at home gracing horror-movie and video-game atmospheric soundscapes and soundtracks.
Haunted House uses a dedicated plug-in, designed with Spitfire's typical approachability and ease of use — but best of all is the price. You can call on the mercurial sounds of Darkstar's twisted electronica for the enticing price of just £29.
