SRM Sounds are a sample library and virtual instrument developer founded by British composer Max Richter, and their debut release captured the sound of Max’s beloved Steinway grand piano. The company’s aim was to deliver a delicate sound that responded well to softer playing, providing an alternative to the more lively sound offered by many libraries.
Their latest release, Dark Mode, takes things a step further, processing some of the original samples with a range of filters and EQs to create an even softer-sounding instrument. The result is a stripped-back version of Max Richter Piano that the company say is full of warmth and character, and boasts a transparent sound that will be well suited to compositions that require a subtle approach. Rather than the multiple mic positions offered by the original, Dark Mode simply provides users with a single mix signal that’s been created using a blend of ribbon mics, processed with Pultec EQs, and as such, occupies far less disk space than its kitted-out sibling. Best of all, it’s being offered as a free download!
“Dark Mode really comes out of my search for a piano which can sit behind pictures, which has a kind of transparency and an unobtrusiveness.” - Max Richter
