Prototype "Optical Humbucker" guitar pickup debuted
A prototype pickup design, dubbed the oPik, was debuted at Summer NAMM by Light4Sound. The pickup is described by its creators as an ‘Optical Humbucker’ and uses pairs of LEDs and sensors arranged in an out of phase configuration in order to reject common-mode light — in the same way a humbucker uses coils wound in opposite directions to cancel out common-mode hum.
What this means is that these pickups can be used in any lighting environment and that they can not only pickup the vibration of metal strings, but also nylon strings and anything else you care to string your electric guitar with. We found out more about the prototype at the Summer NAMM show from one of the pickup’s designers.
