“The sound of a habitat in constant tension”

BOOM Library’s latest release brings together a collection of sounds captured across two expeditions to the wetlands of Florida over a three year period. Led by field recordist Matt Mikkelsen, the project documents wild alligators, dense insect beds, wading birds, mud textures and long, evolving ambiences captured in extreme heat and humidity.

The company say that Swamps follows the tradition established by their highly regarded Thunderstorm Chaser collection, and demanded long periods of observation, deep ecosystem knowledge and the ability to work in environments where equipment failures and physical discomfort are inevitable. After studying each of the location’s sub ecosystems — including cypress groves, open wetlands and transitional areas — Mikkelsen’s team captured over 150 hours of raw material using carefully placed ORTF 3D rigs.

All of the wildlife material presented in Swamps captures animals behaving naturally in the wild. The alligator recordings, in particular, represent authentic territorial bellows at multiple distances, offering a noticeable difference in tone and movement when compared with recordings captured in controlled environments.
