H4 gets a facelift
Other new additions include an on-board speaker, for listening back to your recordings without headphones or monitors; vari-speed playback, which is handy when transcribing interviews and learning riffs; and Stamina mode, which ups the battery life to an impressive 10 hours. Also, there are new guitar effects and amp models built in, and a ‘pre record’ mode, which buffers the incoming signal so that you never miss the start of an interview or performance. The chassis and body of the device has been updated too, with rubberised and shock-resistant edges.
Zoom have announced the H4N, an update to their popular H4 portable audio recorder. Not only does the H4N look significantly different to its predecessor, it also has new features that keep it ahead of the pack, while still retaining the functions that put it there in the first place. So the on-board X-Y condenser mics are still a feature, as are the full-size XLR sockets. But unlike the original H4, both the on-board mics and the external inputs can be recorded on separate channels simultaneously — you heard us right: it’s a four-track!

The H4N can record audio at rates of up to 24-bit/96kHz on SD cards of up to 32GB in size — a 1GB card ships as standard. Also bundled is a wind screen, a mic clip adaptor, power adaptor, USB cable and protective case, and a copy of Cubase LE is thrown in too, so you can get editing without the need to purchase or download additional software. The H4N should be shipping by the end of March, costing £329 including VAT.
