For their latest sample pack, Song Athletics have collaborated with classically-trained percussionist turned producer, composer and ethnomusicologist Magnus Mehta to create a collection of Cuban-inspired drum sounds. Alt Perc Fuego features a mixture of traditional and non-traditional instruments, and includes a versatile selection of loops and one-shot samples.
While the pack draws inspiration from the drum sounds of Cuba, the company say that they’re expressed here “through a lens of broader global influence”. Everything has been performed by Magnus Mehta — who has worked with artists including Jacob Collier, Brian Eno, Damon Albarn, Moses Boyd and Penya — with instruments such as congas, bata, timbale, cajon, bongo, shekere, maraca, clave, bells, blocks, bombo, cata and pans delivering a traditional Cuban sound. Instruments from further afield include the Nigerian bass udu and calabash, the South Indian Ghatam and a selection of shakers and high-pitched instruments originating from Brazil and different regions of Africa.
