Song Athletics have just announced the launch of their latest sample and loop collection, this time capturing an upright piano played by Peter Lyons. Named Sad Piano, the pack contains a selection of delicately played phrases that are said to be well suited to contemporary classical music.
The instrument in question is a Bentley Avon Upright, which the company captured using a pair of Reslo and Xaudia ribbon mics, a pair of beyerdynamic small-diaphragm capacitor and a Microtech Gefell M930 large-diaphragm capacitor — preamp duties fell to AEA TRPs and a Focusrite ISA430. The company say that the piano was recorded closely to provide users with a sense of intimacy, and that the included phrases are “dark yet hopeful”, and have a “special, familiar feel that can conjure great emotion”. Sad Piano comes loaded with a collection of 50 loops, but Song Athletics have also provided a set of 70 multi-samples that users can load into a software sampler of their choice to create their own custom virtual instrument.
Compatibility
Sad Piano contains 24-bit/48kHz WAV files, and so can be used in a wide range of DAW and software sampler packages.
