Since launching in 2023, Song Athletics have launched a string of sample libraries, loop collections, virtual instruments and effects with a number of collaborators, including SRM Sounds, a company founded by composer Max Richter. Their latest release, Friends, marks their first solo project, and brings together a comprehensive selection of commonly used instruments with the aim of creating a go-to ‘studio essentials’ sample library.
Song Athletics say that they focused on creating a collection of instruments that sound exceptional and work well right out of the box. The library includes multi-sampled pianos, keys, synths, basses, guitars and drums, all of which were recorded in great detail at Snap! Studios in London, a renowned studio that’s played host to the likes of Coldplay, Kate Bush, Michael Kiwanuka, Sampha, Ronnie Wood, Liam Gallagher, Floating Points and many more. Everything has been tracked through the studio’s custom 1970’s Neve 53 Series console by a team of esteemed players and producers that are currently working with artists such as Jungle, Ed Sheeran, Frank Ocean, Mahalia, Everything Everything and Doja Cat.

Each instrument features a single mix (some have been created from multiple mic positions) and the library boasts up to six dynamic layers and eight round robins.
Compatibility
Friends runs in Native Instruments’ Kontakt or free Kontakt Player (versions 6.8.0 or above), which are supported on PCs running Windows 10 or 11, and Macs running macOS 10.14 and above. VST, VST3, AU and AAX plug-in versions are available, along with a standalone application.

Friends is available now, and is currently (9 December 2024) being offered at an introductory price of £99, reduced from its full cost of £129. Prices include VAT.
