Minimal Audio’s latest release has been developed with the aim of offering a fresh new take on a classic effect. You can probably guess what effect that is from its name: Poly Flanger, but unlike the competition, this particular plug-in is described at a “musically intelligent flanger”, and has been designed to create modulation effects that remain in key with the source material.
In contrast to regular flangers, the latest addition to the Minimal Audio line-up creates arpeggiated patterns and stacked chords rather than relying on generic sweeps. Users are able to define a scale, and the plug-in will respond by snapping to the closest in-key note, creating rhythmic effects that continually adapt to the incoming signal. Multiple voices can be combined to create more obvious effects, allowing Poly Flanger to be put to work on everything from subtle thickening effects to experimental sound design.
Yet more movement is provided by an LFO-based modulation system, which includes a variety of different wave shapes along with a randomisation function. Much like its main effects, the plug-in’s modulation can be quantised to both rhythm and scale, allowing even the most extreme settings to deliver results that remain in tune with the source material.
