Kontakt (formerly Servisol) Super 10 and equivalent products such as Caig's F5 Faderlube, include a lubricant that makes it suitable for cleaning with pots and faders.
I need to clean the volume and tone controls on a Quad 33 preamp to try and cure ‘scratchiness’. I have a can of Servisol for contact cleaning, but would Deoxit do a better job?

SOS Technical Editor Hugh Robjohns replies: Caig’s Deoxit D5, which you’ll often see recommended, is designed to deal with the tarnishing that builds up over time on the metal contact surfaces of connectors and inside switches. It does that very effectively but it lacks the lubricant that’s essential to the smooth operation of rotary potentiometers (pots) and faders, so I’d recommend sticking with Servisol Super 10 or Kontakt Super 10 (the new name for the same thing) for treating ‘scratchy’ pots. Caig’s equivalent product, F5 Faderlube, should be equally effective.
Bear in mind, though, that there’s only so much cleaning an old pot can take — eventually, the track will wear out and the pot will need replacing.
