AFK Audio launch Drumbeam Kickstarter campaign

Company to launch innovative new MIDI drum controller

AFK Audio Drumbeam MIDI drum controller

AFK Audio have just launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the production of the Drumbeam, a multi-touch MIDI controller that can be played with drumsticks. Boasting an ultra-compact form factor and a completely customisable interface, the innovative product has been designed to provide players with a comprehensive drum controller that fits in a backpack.

The long rectangular device features a silicone playing surface that can be split into 18 playable drumming zones, each of which can be assigned with different behaviours and dynamic responses, with a row of multi-colour LEDs along the face of the controller providing a visual indication of where each zone lies. A range of pre-built arrangements are loaded by default, but users are free to create their own configurations over Wi-Fi using a browser-based application.

AFK Audio say that the feel of the controller was an important consideration, and that the final design offers a good rebound that feel great when performing anything from single hits to rolls. It is said to boast a wide dynamic range, too, promising to capture every nuance of a performance, and it’s capable of capturing up to four hits simultaneously while also detecting gestures such as squeezing and cymbal choking. All captured hits and gestures with the Drumbeam are converted to standard MIDI CC messages, and so the device can be used to trigger and manipulate sounds in a wide range of software and hardware instruments.

The Drumbeam is powered via USB-C, and is capable of transmitting MIDI either over USB, or via a pair of 3.5mm TRS sockets. As for mounting, it comes fitted with a bracket that can be attached to most cymbal and percussion stands, and is supplied with thread adapters that provide compatibility with standard microphone stands.
