After more than three years of intensive research, development and real-world evaluation, Alcons Audio are set to officially launch the new M-series Reference Monitor Systems, their long-awaited entry into the studio and critical-listening market.
Developed from the ground up with the aim of delivering the best possible sonic accuracy and dynamic range, the M-Series brings Alcons’ hallmark pro-ribbon clarity and ultra-low distortion figures to the studio market. Intended applications include immersive sound production, high-end music and film mixing, broadcast control rooms and live-sound monitoring.
M-Series Line-Up
The initial range comprises three models:
- MR5: a ‘micro’, two-way five-inch nearfield/surround monitor.
- MR10: a mid-sized, three-way 10-inch nearfield/mid-field monitor.
- MR12: a large-format, three-way 12-inch mid-field/main monitor.
All three models share identical mid- and high-frequency transducers, ensuring consistent voicing and seamless imaging when creating multi-channel and immersive setups with a mixture of different models.
“Although we’ve always engineered our systems with a Hi-Fi approach, we took every element of the M-series back to first principles — cabinet construction, damping, venting, filtering, even internal cabling and amplifier topology — all were re-evaluated for absolute transparency.” - Philip ‘Dr. Phil’ de Haan, Head of R&D, Alcons Audio
A key component of every M-series system is the company’s multiple-patented RBN202 pro-ribbon driver, which reproduces frequencies from 1kHz up to beyond 20 kHz, covering a much wider range in the all-important midrange than traditional designs. Thanks to a compression-less operating principle and extremely low moving mass, the RBN202 promises to deliver a fully linear response at any playback level, combining exceptional transient detail with fatigue-free listening, even during extended sessions.
Complementing the pro-ribbon driver are custom-engineered midrange and low-frequency transducers that employ ActiveCoil motor structures for ultra-low distortion, along with a newly developed ScoopVent low-frequency loading design that is said to enhance breathing capacity and transient response, maintaining clarity and control even in the lowest octaves.
The M-series is powered and controlled by Alcons’ ALC amplified loudspeaker controllers, which feature VHIR phase processing, 192kHz-capable AES3 digital inputs and high-quality amplification stages. They utilise a remote-amplified architecture that has been designed to eliminates local heat build-up and ensure the systems are remain reliable and deliver consistent performance.
“Entering a new market demands a product that truly sets a benchmark. With the M-series, we’ve bridged the gap between reference monitoring and high-output sound reinforcement — all built on the same proprietary transducer, amplification and processing foundation.” - Tom Back, Co-Founder, Alcons Audio
