Audio-Technica will be unveilling the latest addition to its flagship 50 Series studio microphone range at the AES Convention in Los Angeles today.
We've got an exclusive review of this mic, the AT5045, in the upcoming Novermber edition of the magazine, out October 23rd, so keep your eyes peeled!
The AT5045 is a hand-built, large-diaphragm, stick-design side-address condenser instrument microphone with a cardioid polar pattern designed to deliver natural, well-balanced sound with exceptional realism and depth. Available separately or as stereo pairs (AT5045P), the mics are engineered to meet the most critical requirements of professional recording.
The AT5045’s large diaphragm is designed for a fast transient response, low noise, high SPL handling (149 dB SPL) and a wide dynamic range (141 dB). These specifications make it an ideal instrument microphone, particularly suited to use on overheads, percussion, acoustic guitar, strings and other acoustic instruments requiring the capture of dynamic, detailed sound.
The AT5045 employs a prorprietary, large rectangular element, crafted by Audio-Technica engineers to improve transient response and increase response bandwidth. Discrete components and aging of its two-micron-thick, vapour-deposited gold diaphragm are intended to make for sonic characteristics that will remain constant over years of use.
Another key AT5045 design feature is its advanced internal shock mounting, which effectively decouples the capsule from the microphone body. For additional isolation, the AT5045 comes with an innovative isolation clamp, engineered not only to isolate the microphone but also to provide versatile positioning while offering effective damping of mechanical noise and resonances that could be transmitted to the microphone. The cardioid polar pattern of the microphone is more sensitive to sound originating directly in front of the element, making it effective in reducing pickup of unwanted sounds and providing isolation of the instrument.
The AT5045 is enclosed in a rugged aluminium and brass housing, which also allows it to be used for live-sound applications. An AT8165 windscreen and custom hard-shell carrying case are also included.
