Audio Technica have launched two new products this month, first of which is an affordable pair of headphones that, in theory, should be particularly well suited to tracking. A closed-back, dynamic design, the ATH M10 has circum-aural ear cups to “provide maximum acoustic isolation”, while their light weight (210g) and adjustable headband are said to make them highly comfortable, even during long sessions.
Frequency response is quoted as 30Hz to 20kHz, sensitivity is given as 100dB, and the maximum power output is 500mW at 1kHz. Impedance is a fairly low 40 Ohms, and the headphones come, as you’d expect, with a with a 3.5mm jack cable plus an eight-inch to quarter-inch jack adaptor. No UK price was available at the time of writing, but to give you some idea, they carry a US MSRP of $59.
And at the other end of the chain, Audio Technica have also unveiled a new boundary microphone, dubbed the ES963. A three-element mic, the ES963 is designed for surface-mount operation in situations such as sound reinforcement, conferences, music recording and broadcast. The three elements can be used in any combination (either all together, or with one or two elements unused), while two of the elements have small positioning levers, so the microphone offers coverage of anywhere between 360 and 90 degrees. Furthermore, with just two elements in play, the mic can be set to have a figure-of-eight polar pattern.
The mic can operate on phantom power of voltages anywhere between 11V and 52V, and has a low-impedance balanced output. Again, no UK price was available, but in the US the Audio Technica ES963 will sell for around $495.
