Vienna-based effects pedal experts Becos FX have announced the launch of an updated version of their popular dual-compressor pedal. The CompIQ Twain Pro MkII replaces the two saturation engines used in the original design with switchable feed-forward or feedback operation modes and some other nice-to-have extras.
The pedal can function either as a two-band compressor and limiter with a variable crossover point, or as two ‘stacked’ compressors each with their own independent set of controls. While the original device offered variable harmonic distortion for each of its sections, the latest iteration features a multi-function switch that offers feed-forward and feedback compression modes for each band, as well as a combination of feed-forward and feedback for the low- and high-frequency bands respectively.
There’s also a variable side-chain filter for each band (±12dB at 90Hz and ±7dB at 3kHz, both with 12dB/octave slopes), an updated input preamp with ±12dB of gain adjustment, and a signal peak level indicator for the pedal’s input and output.
In feed-forward mode, the unit utilises a pre-VCA copy of the input signal, offering a fast and accurate compression character; the mode can range from subtle compression to brick-wall limiting, depending on the control settings. The newly introduced feedback compression option employs a post-VCA copy of the audio signal, resulting in a smoother response that the company say is ideal for transparently evening out playing dynamics.
The company also offer an optional DITOS board that adds a transformer-coupled output on a quarter-inch TRS connector. It can be used to provide a balanced output for direct recording, or an additional, floating unbalanced output that can feed another pedal or amplifier. The main output remains functional with the board fitted.
