The latest announcement from Brainworx sees the company bring the algorithms behind the popular mastering.studio online service to a standalone desktop application. Available as a free download, bx_mastering studio comes loaded with a selection of preset mastering styles, and includes a set of tools that allow users to fine-tune the results or create their own custom styles.
Once bx_mastering studio is installed, getting started is as simple as importing the tracks that are to be mastered, and selecting one of the 11 preset styles. The resulting sound can then be adjusted to taste using the software’s Tone and Dynamics tabs. The former houses a three-band EQ section along with high- and low-pass filters, resonance filters, a Presence control and a Mono Maker dial; the latter includes compressor and limiter sections, as well as a single-knob de-esser and a Harmonics section equipped with variable THD and Saturation controls. Styles can be applied globally or on a per-track basis, and if none of the built-in options do the trick, users are able to create their own custom setup.
Brainworx say that the automated processes behind the application have been developed by meticulously analysing masters from Grammy-winning engineers including Howie Weinberg, while the Tone and Dynamics tabs have been derived from their popular bx_masterdesk series. It supports files up to 32-bit/192kHz, and offers a great way to create DIY masters for popular streaming platforms such as Spotify, Tidal and Apple Music, as well as providing podcasters and YouTube creators with the tools to achieve more polished, professional-sounding audio.
