Extinct Audio launch MoMics

New online resource covers over 200 models at launch

MoMics Museum of Microphones online mic documentation example recordings

Extinct Audio have announced the launch of a new online resource that collates a wealth of information on microphones. Named MoMics, or the Museum of Microphones, the website brings together an array of photographs, documents and sound recordings for over 200 mic models.

The current collection includes mics that date back to the earliest days of telephony, including a replica of Alexander Graham Bell’s first working transmitter from 1876. There’s also some “crunchy-sounding” carbon microphones dating back to the 1920, ribbon mics from the 1930s that were used for recording motion pictures, and broadcast mics from the early 40s that were used by the likes of Charles De Gaulle and Winston Churchill — there’s even a mic that was used to locate incoming enemy aircraft in World War 2!

The collection will be updated over time, with Extinct Audio saying that they plan to add extra resources as they’re discovered, and upload additional recordings when they find time to make them!
