Grotbox: secondary reference monitor

3W USB-powered with in-line volume control

Grotbox secondary mix reference studio monitor

Subdust, a UK-based music and studio services company, have announced the launch of a new compact active monitor designed to serve as a secondary, limited-bandwidth, reference speaker for checking of mixes.

Appropriately named the Grotbox, the unit is incredibly compact, its plastic enclosure measures just 85 x 85 x 80 mm, and can be powered from a USB supply. Its mono input is handled by a 3.5mm mini-jack connector, which features an in-line volume control — if you’re looking to drive it from a quarter-inch TRS or XLR, you’ll need to combine the unit’s flying cable with an appropriate adapter.

Output delivers a modest 3W into 4 Ohms. Having been designed for secondary reference duties means that Grotbox exhibits a limited frequency range, providing users with an insight into how their mixes will fare when heard on consumer playback systems. It offers a valuable ’second opinion’ on issues such as the balance between key elements in a mix, as well as helping to maximise midrange clarity and ensure that low-frequency content is still represented on systems that lack bass extension.

We've just bought one, so expect a Sound On Sound review in an upcoming issue.

Pricing & Availability

The Grotbox is available now, priced at £19.95 including VAT + shipping. It can be purchased with black, blue, grey or red front grille options fitted.
