Krotos have announced that their innovative Krotos Studio sound-design software now includes a built-in tool which they say re-writes the rule book on creating realistic crowd sound effects.
Creating convincing crowd sounds can be a tedious process, and the traditional approach of using pre-recorded library sounds has some significant downsides. The most obvious hurdle is sourcing a recording of a crowd that contains the appropriate amount of people, and making sure that the tone of voices matches what’s happening on screen. There’s also the issue of file length: if a scene runs for longer than the chosen audio, then duplicating it may well lead to obvious looping effects.
Aiming to tackle the time-consuming issue, Krotos have set about introducing a Crowd Generator function capable of instantly creating and customising crowd sounds. The new tool is already available, and comes loaded with 16 new presets that can be freely edited by the user. As well as controlling the amount of voices present, there are options provided for dictating the intensity of the voices and the balance between male and female voices.
Starting Points
The 16 presets cover a wide range of scenarios, and include:
- Booing Crowd
- Mob Rage
- Laughing Crowd
- Social Crowd
- Callouts 1
- Callouts 2
- Callouts 3

- Coughing Crowd
