Monk Echo: Debut pedal from Mentha Works

Reverb & delay emulates human vocal tones with formant filters

Mentha Works Monk Echo reverb delay human choir vocal formant filter guitar pedal

Metha Works are a new company founded by Toms Lazdovskis and Matiss Tazans, a pair of musicians and sound designers who were previously a part of the Gamechanger Audio team. Their debut product — which has been developed alongside a team with experience at other top-name brands such as Neural DSP, Darkglass and Marshall — is an innovative delay and reverb pedal that blends the usual array of ambient effects with a set of morphing filters designed to emulate human vocal resonances.

Named the Monk Echo, the pedal promises to deliver everything from “gentle, angelic echo tails to distorted and self-oscillating wall of sound.“ It centres around separate reverb and delay engines that can be blended together, but where it differs from the competition is its extensive use of formant filters. The pedal draws its inspiration from Baltic choral traditions and mythical acoustic architecture, and provides users with a set of parameters that make it possible to craft a whole host of vocal-like tones. a range of vowel-sound choices are joined by male, female and children vocal characters, and it’s possible to glide continuously between vowel shapes, or even configure them to respond to playing dynamics.

A Macro Control system allows players to link multiple parameters to a single control source, making it possible to sweep smoothly between dramatically different sound states. The control can be operated via a dedicated knob or footswitch on the pedal itself, or remotely via an expression pedal. An 8x8 Dot Display provides instant visual feedback of every parameter movement.
