Relay-based switchers feature MIDI integration

N-Audio have announced the release of two new switching systems aimed at those using multiple guitar or bass amplifiers and cabinets in their studio or live setups. The 4X4 Amp Cabinet Switcher and 8X7 Amp Cabinet Switcher are both relay-based devices that allow users to quickly switch between amplifiers without the need to re-patch, as well as providing integration with external power attenuators. Each of the units also boast MIDI connectivity which allows their switching functions to be controlled remotely.

Instrument input connections are placed on both the front and rear panel of both units, with the remaining connectivity populating the devices’ rear panel. Users are able to select their chosen amplifier and cabinet combination using a row of front panel switches, or cut their signal entirely using a Mute switch. Pressing and holding the Mute switch engages a MIDI Learn function, allowing users to program each relay to respond to incoming MIDI messages. An insert loop allows an external power attenuator to be used with any of the connected amplifiers, and can be engaged or bypassed via another front panel switch.

4X4 Amp Cabinet Switcher

The smaller of the two devices provides connections for up to four valve or solid-state amplifiers and four cabinets, and is capable of driving up to three of those cabinets simultaneously. To ensure that a connected instrument’s tone is left unaltered, the signal path contains only relays, and the only active electronics present in the device are used to provide a dedicated output for a tuner.

N-Audio say that the 4X4 will work with almost any guitar or bass amplifier. The device is capable of switching a 1000W amplifier when using a cabinet with an impedance of 8Ω, although the precise maximum power rating depends on the power and impedance of the connected equipment.

8X7 Amp Cabinet Switcher

The 8X7 variant is built around the same circuitry as the 4X4, but occupies a larger 19-inch rackmount chassis and offers connectivity for up to eight valve or solid-state amplifiers and seven cabinets. Once again, up to three of those cabinets can be run in parallel.
