Breverb, the RTAS, VST and Audio Units reverb plug-in from Italian developers Overloud, is now available after being announced in early 2007.
The plug-in has four algorithms: Hall, Room, Plate and Inverse, which are modelled on existing hardware units, and engineered by Overloud to “achieve maximum quality”. The developers say that due to Breverb’s algorithmic design (as opposed to convolution, which uses large amounts of the host CPU’s resources), many instances of the plug-in can be used simultaneously. They even claim that 120 stereo Breverbs can be opened on a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo Apple Macbook Pro, not that you’d ever need that many!
The plug-in’s Graphical User Interface (GUI) has been designed in a similar style to hardware remote controls such as the LARC (Lexicon Alphanumeric Remote Control), but it can be collapsed into a ‘compact’ mode. When in expanded mode (as in the screenshot, right), Breverb’s GUI has six assignable faders, plus six virtual knobs, which can be automated and controlled by MIDI.
The plug-in has a full-range EQ section, allowing the user to tailor the frequency content of Breverb’s output. It’s also got a gate and a modulation section, which allows you to add “life and musicality” to your music. Breverb is available through Time + Space in the UK for £199, and from Ilio in the USA, for $399. It is compatible with Mac and PC.
