Originally launched in 1960, Sennheiser’s MD 421 (and its successor, the MD 421-II) are both hugely popular ‘all-rounder’ mics that have found their way onto countless recordings, broadcasts and live shows. Now, with the release of the MD 421 Kompakt, the same sound and performance is available with a much smaller footprint.
The new Kompakt model alongside an MD 421-II.The company say that all of the features that made the original so popular remain. The frequency response extends from 30Hz to 17kHz, allowing the mic to faithfully reproduce both low- and high-frequency content and offer a clear, detailed and full-bodied sound. It also promises effective feedback rejection and is said to be capable of withstanding exceptionally high SPLs.
As you’d expect, the Kompakt has been designed to stand up to the rigours of touring and heavy use, and comes housed in a rugged body with a stainless steel basket, with an inner chassis enclosure helping to protect against dust and humidity. An element of the original that has been met with criticism is its clip, and Sennheiser have addressed the issue here by implementing a new integral design, as well as offering dedicated drum clamp that attaches directly to it — it can be purchased either alongside the mic or as a separate accessory.
