Described as a “bigger maker”, SPL’s BiG is a 500-series module that provides a simple and intuitive way to enhance a source’s stereo imaging without encountering the phase issues that affect many such devices. Now, thanks to a collaboration with renowned software developer Brainworx, the processor is now available in digital form as part of the Plugin Alliance line‑up.
Simply named SPL BiG, the new plug-in precisely models the innovative circuitry found in the module — a filtering network designed to avoid phase shifts, cancellations and unwanted artifacts — providing users with the ability to add some depth and width to individual tracks, groups or entire mixes. As with its hardware counterpart, the plug-in boasts a simple set of controls, with its main view sporting just three knobs and a pair of switches.
There’s a Range control that determines which area of the frequency range will be subject to processing, while a Stage control defines the slope and bandwidth. A Bigness dial then acts like a blend control, mixing in the original audio signal in an effort to control the plug-in’s overall effect on stereo imaging and balance. SPL BiG also includes a Bass toggle switch, which introduces a bass boost inspired by the AirBass circuit found in SPL’s IRON Mastering Compressor, resulting in some additional low-end ‘warmth’.
Hitting the Expert toggle switch in the plug-in’s GUI will reveal some features that aren’t present in the 500-series module, including pan controls, automatic gain compensation, Mid-Side metering, and Mid and Side signal solo functions.
Compatibility
SPL BiG is supported on PCs running Windows 10 or 11, and Macs running macOS 12 or higher. VST2, VST3, AU and AAX plug-in versions are available.
