The latest addition to SSL’s ever-growing range of plug-ins was originally developed for their SSL Live console series to help engineers tackle mic bleed and feedback issues, but the concept proved to be a useful addition to studio engineers’ toolkits. Sourcerer is said to be capable of quickly targeting specific sounds and removing them in a natural way, all while retaining the original characteristics of the wanted source.
The plug-in applies a combination of frequency-dependent expansion, filtering and side-chain controls, and promises to isolate sources without introducing any of the artifacts associated with more traditional gates or ducking compressors. Despite the intricate approach, it offers a compact, user-friendly GUI with just a handful of controls.
Threshold and Depth parameters define the level at which processing is applied, and how much attenuation is applied — at its extreme, the Depth control allows for -41dB of gain reduction — while variable low- and high-pass side-chain filters make it possible to adjust the frequency range that will trigger the processing. It is also possible to switch between peak and RMS detection modes. Three pre-defined release times are provided: Fast (~100ms), Medium (~250ms) and Slow (~500ms), with the faster settings accommodating transient-heavy sources, and the slower options providing a more subtle option for sustained sounds.
A Ducking option helps to improve the plug-in’s response to material with inconsistent background noise. The process works by adding a DC signal to the plug-in’s side-chain, raising the noise floor and making it easier for Sourcerer to distinguish between wanted sounds and background noise. Expanding the section provides users with Gain and Delay parameters that govern the amount of ducking gain applied and allow users to add a delay to the side-chain signal.
Compatibility
Sourcerer is supported on PCs running Windows 10 and above, and Macs running macOS 11 or higher. VST2, VST3, AU and AAX plug-in versions are available.
Pricing & Availability
Sourcerer is available now, priced at $79.99£76.78 including VAT. It is also included in SSL/Slate Digital’s Complete Access plug-in subscription package, or via their Rent To Own plan. A 14-day trial version is available for those who wish to audition the plug-in before making a purchase.
