April 2013 edition front coverApril 2013 edition front coverIn our modular synths cover feature this month, we step away from the modular mainstream and take a look at some of the more eccentric Eurorack synths modules out there.

The SOS review team test the latest virtual analogue synth from Korg, the KingKorg, Microtech Geffell's valve capacitor mic, the CMV563 M7S and Danfield Audio's MX30T preamp and compressor. We also give you our verdict on the 2030 active three-way monitors from Event, Prodipe's RSL stereo ribbon microphone and review new products from Notion, Trident, Sound Toys, ART, Digitech, Soniccourute, Toontrack, Universal Audio, Allen & Heath and TK Audio.

In this month's Inside Track we examine the soundtrack from box office smash Les Miserables, and find out how Tom Hooper and his technical crew managed to reinvent film soundtrack recording. In an interview with breakthrough producer, Charlie Andrew, we discuss his recording of Mercury Prize-winning Alt-J and Madness. Meanwhile, in Classic Tracks we go behind the scenes of Mike Oldfield's debut LP, Tubular Bells. Also, we talk to leading classical engineer and producer Philip Hobbs, of Linn Records, about making recordings designed to show off hi-fi systems.

Our live-sound section features reviews of Mackie's DLM-series active PA speakers with DSP, the Allen & Heath GLD digital mixing console and Audio Technica's ATM510 and ATM610A dynamic microphones.

In the App Works column, we review a new synth from PPG by the name of WaveMapper, a music education app from Touch Press, the Jam Up Pro XT guitar amp effect and Delora IpTouch, a low-cost Logic controller for iOS.

You'll also find our regular selection of DAW workshops, new product news, and a Sounding Off piece from Grammy-winning producer, Simon Gogerly. On top of that, we give a quick run down of guitar amp simulation software on the market at the moment in our Spotlight section.
