Akai have updated their MPK range of keyboard controllers with four new models: the MPK225, MPK249, MPK261 and MPK mini. These, needless to say, are the 25, 49, 61-key and miniature updated versions of the popular MPK range.
Akai have redesigned the keyboard itself within the three larger models, creating a feel that they describe as being somewhere between a player's keyboard and a synth action. The pads now also have full RGB backlighting which makes it possible to have the pads light up with purples, greens and blues, so it's easier to identify which pad is assigned to which action. In addition, the pads also have an increased sensitivity.
One of the limitations with the previous generation of MPK controllers was the use of point-to-point rotary knobs, but these have been replaced by endless rotary encoders.
The MPK mini has seen some improvements too, with a multi-job, joystick-style control to allow X-Y control in a small space.
Each of the largest three models also ship with a software suite including MPC Essentials, as well as software from Akai sister companies such as Twist 2 from Sonivox and Hybrid 3 from Air.
