Active Nearfield Monitors
New from Akai at Summer NAMM 2009 are the RPM8 active nearfield monitors. They are bi-amplified and have eight-inch low-frequency drivers and one-inch tweeters, with dedicated 80W RMS and 40W RMS amplifiers respectively.
The RPM8’s frequency response is impressive, with front slotted ports helping them extend down to 39Hz. Because of this, Akai say that they are well suited for use on bass-heavy material, such as that commonly made by users of Akai’s MPC sampler workstations. They cost $499 each and should be shipping around October.
