Acustica release Pearl 3

Replicates rare Italian broadcast processor

Acustica Pearl 3 EQ compressor analogue emulation plug-in

Originally launched over a decade ago as a limited-edition download, Acustica’s Pearl delivers a meticulous recreation of one of the rarest Italian broadcast processors ever built. The third iteration of the software has now been released, and this time, it’s being offered as a ‘standard’ product and will form a permanent part of the company’s line-up.

Pearl 3 is delivered as a suite of three plug-ins: Pearl 3 EQ, which emulates a solid-state equaliser; Pearl 3 Comp, a vintage-inspired compressor; and Pearl 3 Strip, a channel strip that combines a preamp, EQ and compressor. Each of the plug-ins are housed in a GUI that replicates the hardware panel of the processor that inspired Pearl 3, and feature an optional graphical display that provides the sort of real-time visual feedback that’s common with modern plug-ins.

Acustica say that the latest version captures the non-linear behaviour, tonal density and dynamic response of the original hardware — a unit that was designed and built when audio equipment was engineered without compromise. Thanks to the company’s Hyper modelling technology, Pearl 3 is said to respond naturally to signal level, closely mimicking the behaviour of the physical version and imparting tracks with a musical sense of weight and presence.

Acustica Pearl 3 CompressorPearl 3 is provided as a suite of three separate plug-ins: Pearl 3 EQ, Pearl 3 Comp (pictured above) and Pearl 3 Strip.

The EQ plug-in favours musical shaping rather than surgical correction; it is said to excel on busses and full mixes, providing users with the means to apply broad strokes that guide the overall sound of their track rather than focusing on narrow, problem-solving cuts.  The compressor then aims to deliver firm yet musical control, acting as ‘mix glue’ instead of obviously flattening transients. Finally, the channel strip recreates a complete analogue signal path, and has been laid out in a way that encourages tone- and feel-based adjustments rather than technical tweaking.
