Looking to get started in Dolby Atmos? We show you the ropes.

It’s now more than two years since the internal Dolby Atmos renderer was introduced to Pro Tools Studio and Ultimate. That change made the format far more approachable. Earlier Atmos workflows were technical enough to deter many who were simply curious. This article is aimed at users who haven’t yet taken the first steps, and who want a practical, low‑friction way to try Atmos.

There are two primary obstacles stopping people from dipping a toe into immersive mixing. The first is monitoring: a proper Atmos loudspeaker array is a significant investment. The second is setup complexity. It isn’t unusual for first‑time users to spend more time inside the I/O Setup window than actually mixing. Yet neither of these barriers needs to prevent you exploring Atmos in Pro Tools.

Much of the processing and decision‑making for an Atmos mix is already present in your stereo mix. Importing those decisions into an Atmos session gives you a starting point from which to experiment. And while new users tend to be drawn to dramatic placements and movement, those techniques are rarely the foundation of an effective Atmos music mix. It’s worth indulging the temptation early — get the wild panning out of your system — but the real strength of Atmos lies in its ability to extend a familiar stereo presentation rather than replace it.

Before looking at routing and placement, it’s worth addressing two early realities: you’ll spend time in the I/O Setup window, and you’ll almost certainly monitor on headphones at first.

I/O Silver Lining

Pro Tools does not offer a built‑in shortcut to open I/O Setup, and during your first few Atmos sessions you’ll inevitably go there a lot. A handy tip is to use the new SoundFlow tab on the right‑hand sidebar. Search for I/O and the top result, ‘Setup Menu: I/O’, appears as a clickable button. Simply leave that search active and you have one‑click access throughout setup. You can, of course, create something more permanent, but this is a low‑effort shortcut.

Start by using a template. In the New Session dialogue, tick Create from Template and choose the Dolby Atmos Internal Renderer session. Most of the routing you’ll need is already configured. The template includes mono and stereo audio tracks routed for both beds and objects. Duplicate tracks to match your requirements. With destination tracks prepared and clearly named, use Import Session Data to bring material across from your stereo project. In most cases you’ll retain plug‑in, volume and pan settings; the point is to preserve existing mix decisions so that you can focus on spatial choices rather than rebuilding the fundamentals....
