Eddie Kramer is renowned for his engineering work on records by artists such as Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin and the Stones, and he's just put his chops to work on a new SDX expansion for Toontrack's virtual drum software, Superior Drummer 3.
Legacy Of Rock was recorded at London's AIR Studio using a glut of vintage microphones and outboard, and comprises recordings of five complete drum kits plus three extra kick drums, six supplementary snares and a variety of cymbals, plus two timpani and even some gongs.
Each kit was assembled to match the drums of various classic Kramer recordings, with the Amber kit being inspired by John Bonham's setup for the 1976 Madison Square Garden recordings, the Sparkle kit paying tribute to Led Zeppelin II, the Jet Black and Oyster kits being fashioned after those used on the Stones' Beggars Banquet album, and finally the Silver kit, which replicates that used by Mitch Mitchell on Hendrix's classic Axis: Bold As Love.
In terms of user control, Legacy Of Rock lets you balance the close mics against five additional room microphones, for playback in stereo or even 5.1 surround.
Also included in the expansion are some presets made by Eddie Kramer himself, plus a set of MIDI files inspired by classic tracks from his discography.
Eddie Kramer's Legacy Of Rock SDX for Superior Drummer is available now, and costs £129. Watch the video below to see how it was made.
